Dr. Chaby's Great Discovery

One day, Dr. Chaby gathered all the inhabitants of the forest. He was going to give an important speech about the “truth” of this world. He had discovered that everything happening in the forest followed a pattern — fresh food and water would appear at regular intervals. There were also the terrifying “earthquakes,” and after each earthquake, order would be restored, beginning a new cycle once again. The little fleas were astonished! They cheered for him, celebrating this as the most significant discovery in the world's progression. But just as this “truth” received the highest recognition, an earthquake struck suddenly and without warning...What followed was a story in a brand-new world.

Character Design

This is the hamster I have. I saw a film online of someone simulating the first person perspective of a hamster, and that inspired me to use a hamster as the main character.

Scene Making

At first I chose cardstock to create the scene, but the result was not satisfactory.Later I used a lot of different materials to make the scene look more immersive

Yelli's Revenge

In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, there was a family with strained relationships. Grandpa Zhang Lei was a fabric craftsman, but his son, Zhang Wei, influenced by New Youth, dismissed his father’s craftsmanship, believing education was the key to saving the country. Zhang Wei's daughter, Zhang Jing, loved her grandfather's dolls, often quarreling with her father over them. When Zhang Jing grew up, she left home to become a frontline nurse, leaving behind only her father and her favorite doll, Yelli. Missing his daughter, Zhang Wei was startled when Yelli suddenly came to life, imitating Zhang Jing’s demeanor and throwing New Youth at him. Zhang Wei, seeing his daughter in Yelli, interacted with the doll as if it were his daughter and fell asleep on her bed, holding it tightly.

Research & Sketches

Before I went abroad, my room was full of dolls, picture books, and precious gifts, each with special meaning. When I returned a year later, I found that my father had thrown everything away, leaving the room empty. This left me feeling disappointed and emotionally distant from my family, a common experience for many in my generation.

Dad Zhang Wei

A young scholar born in early Republic of China, Zhang Wei is stubborn and dislikes the family’s craft business. Influenced by the New Culture Movement, he believes education is the key to societal change, leading to conflict with his father and daughter.

Doll Yelli

A handmade fabric doll created by Grandpa Zhang Lei for his granddaughter, Yelli resembles her in appearance and temperament. In Zhang Wei's imagination, Yelli becomes a stand-in for his daughter, expressing his emotions through aggression.

Daughter Zhang Jing

Zhang Jing loved her grandfather’s crafts and the doll Yelli, often clashing with her father. As a frontline nurse, she rarely returns home, mostly keeping in touch through letters due to years of conflict with her father.

Grandpa Zhang Lei

A calm and skilled craftsman from the late Qing Dynasty, Zhang Lei owns a craft shop and created the beloved doll Yelli for his granddaughter.

Keyframe

An astrologer once told me that my parents were the same in my past life. We were born in the Republic of China but died young due to war. In this life, we reunited in peace. Since my father loves spy war dramas, I wanted to use the Republic of China as the backdrop to explore the father-daughter relationship through dolls, focusing on the estrangement and healing that comes with growing up.

Golem

This is a gingerbread museum, built on the remains of a vanished gingerbread town. Here you can see the houses that people once built with gingerbread, which were so magnificent. But why was it destroyed? Because a giant gingerbread monster ate the entire town and the villagers. In the critical moment, an unsung hero stopped the gingerbread monster. When visiting the martyrs' cemetery in the museum, a soul floated out of the tomb of a man named Maharal. He said: I'm sorry for what I did, can you come and help me? What happened? Is there any secret behind this gingerbread town? You follow this soul into the memory...

Process

This is the world view setting of the gingerbread town and gingerbread museum.

I want to perfect this story, add a complete world view and interaction, and let the audience participate in the story. So before that, I made a handmade mechanism game book.

Final Outcomes

Finally, an interactive game video was presented in the form of a dynamic picture book. Whether it is children or parents, they can get feelings in the game story experience.
